3. India falls short in the final at Ahmedabad, handing Australia their sixth World Cup title
4. Vaughan commends Australia for their exceptional victory in the face of challenging circumstances
Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, recently celebrated Australia’s World Cup victory, labeling it as the most remarkable in the history of the ODI tournament. He commended the Australian team for triumphing over India on their home turf, in front of a roaring crowd of 100,000 Indian spectators.
Despite India’s unbeaten record going into the final, they couldn’t deliver their best performance on the crucial day. After being put into bat, India faltered, posting a modest 240. Travis Head’s impressive knock of 137 off 120 balls, comprising 15 boundaries and four sixes, propelled Australia to their sixth World Cup crown.
In his column for the ‘Daily Telegraph’, Vaughan expressed his awe, stating, “Australia’s victory in Ahmedabad caps the best World Cup win I can remember in my time playing and covering cricket.” He highlighted the extraordinary nature of their achievement, particularly considering the daunting circumstances.
Vaughan likened the current Australian team’s accomplishment to the triumphs of cricketing legends from the late 1990s and early to mid-2000s, such as Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Steve Waugh, and Glenn McGrath. He emphasized the significance of clinching the title in India, a feat that eluded the greats of the past.
Acknowledging the challenge of living up to the legacy of past Australian teams, Vaughan lauded the current players, including Warner, Smith, Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood, as a special and deserving team. He highlighted their previous successes in the World Cup and T20 World Cup, as well as their ability to excel in diverse conditions, cementing their status as the best team across formats.
Vaughan concluded by acknowledging Australia’s dominance across all formats and conceded that they currently hold the mantle as the best cricket team in the world, a feat even England cannot refute.
