Rohit Sharma’s Insights on World Cup Setback

Tags: ICC World Cup 2023

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of Team India, has shared his thoughts on the potential squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023, as the deadline of September 5 for squad submission approaches. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has indicated that the team for the World Cup is likely to resemble the recently named Asia Cup squad, leading to the possibility of some notable players missing out.

Currently, India is engaged in a pre-tournament camp in Alur, gearing up for the Asia Cup, commencing on August 30 and adopting a hybrid model to be played in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Following the Asia Cup, India’s next challenge will be against Australia in three ODIs at home, leading up to the World Cup in India scheduled from October 5 to November 19.

The preliminary World Cup squads are set to be announced by September 5, with the final 15-man squad deadline on September 28. Following this, any alterations will require approval from the ICC. Rohit Sharma emphasized the challenges of finalizing a cohesive squad.

“Selecting the best combination means that there will be individuals left out for various reasons. Rahul bhai [Dravid] and I have made a concerted effort to communicate to the players the reasons behind their exclusion from the squad. We have endeavored to have one-on-one discussions with the players after every selection and playing XI announcement,” Rohit mentioned, as per the ICC website.

The 36-year-old captain is familiar with the disappointment of being left out, having experienced exclusion from the Indian squad for the 2011 World Cup, a tournament that the Indian team went on to win under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Recollecting those challenging times, Rohit shared that senior all-rounder Yuvraj Singh provided crucial guidance that helped him overcome the setback.

“I try to empathize with those players in such situations. When I was not selected in 2011, it was a deeply disheartening moment for me, and I understood the feeling of being omitted from a World Cup squad. If anyone misses out, there are valid reasons behind it. If you happen to be the unlucky one, there is little that can be done,” Rohit expressed.

“I was feeling dejected, sitting in my room, uncertain about the next steps. I recall Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] inviting me to his room and taking me out for dinner. He explained to me the emotions associated with being left out. He said, ‘The positive aspect is that you have many years ahead of you. While we play in the World Cup, utilize this time to diligently hone your game and skills, and stage a comeback. There is no doubt that you will represent India or get an opportunity to play in the World Cup’,” the prolific opener revealed.

Following the disappointment of being excluded from the 2011 World Cup, the Indian batsman diligently worked on his game, demonstrating that no one can claim it to be easier said than done.

After missing out in 2011, Rohit Sharma showcased impressive performances in the last two ODI World Cups. He was the second highest run-scorer for India in 2015, amassing 330 runs in eight matches. In 2019, he emerged as the leading run-scorer, racking up 648 runs in nine matches, including a record five centuries.
